My first big blueberry harvest using my custom blueberry apron! I find it is much faster to harvest with two hands and it is too time consuming to walk back to the bowl with each handful. This is my solution. I think it needs one small modification and it will be perfect!

Turn it up! I took Vi to the other end of the garden so she had to walk back for exercise. Not a #walkofshame, but a walk of rage! She yelled the whole way! Broody rage is serious! She’s 8 years old! I tried to tell her that she was more suited to being a grandmother than a mother but that did not go over well. I think she has been sitting on zero eggs for 3 weeks now.

Was this a dahlia? I’m using past tense because someone ate it and dug up the roots overnight. I was pretty excited to see what it was going to be. I don’t specifically remember planting it last year but the disappointment of seeing it destroyed actually rings a bell. This may be a pattern.

These are the most delicious black raspberries. I wish I could get them to produce better! They only set fruit on the second year growth so they need constant pruning and training. They are harboring a bumper crop of #poisonivy so I can’t really get in there to work on them. Also, the basketball hoop is adjacent so they often get beat up. They aren’t really primed for success.

I got some new pruners and all of my tomatoes got a haircut! I cut off lots of extra stems and suckers to allow airflow to the plants. I also cut off all of the lowest leaves to prevent soil borne diseases from creeping in. It’s hard to get started, but once I did it was really satisfying to open up the vines and let the sunshine in!

Breakfast bar! The lettuce is bolting in the heat (it’s going to be 90° F today) so I’m sharing with the flock. They completely consumed this head in about an hour. That’s a lot if tiny beak sized bites!

Word is that there are protesters in downtown Lawrenceville. Since I’m not cognitively able to walk around for hours holding my phone up recording nothing we went out and picked up trash. If you want to make a positive change go do something positive. Wherever you are there is a street nearby with trash on it and no one will arrest you for cleaning it up. Please don’t be like the larpers on CNN walking around with their kitchen broom and dust pan, actual clean up involves trash bags, a box… or in my case a utv 😎

It’s almost blueberry time! The berries are starting to plump up and change colors. It’s still a week or two until the harvest begins. At the peak I can get more than a gallon a day off of the 5 big bushes.

There is a Brontosaurus in my lettuce! Bryce does not normally leave the enclosed chicken area. This leads me to believe someone either let her out while reentering themselves or someone encouraged her to fly over the fence. These alleged someones are Gretchen, Ruth (both can open the door to get back in) and Glo (who can fly out but not let herself in). I do not need them creating accomplices.

Well, this year the squirrels are beating out fungus in the race to destroy the nectarines. It wasn’t even close. I think they’ll have the whole tree cleared this week. Last year it was a much closer race with fungus taking at least 50% of the crop before the squirrels caught on. Now, what will get the apples? Will it be these same champion squirrels or will the ever vigilant worms find an opening? Only time will tell.

My tiny archiologists have unearthed a mango pit that they cleaned last year! I was able to crack open the hard outer shell and the interior seed looks like a giant lima bean. Very interesting. I appreciate the continuity of their efforts. Tiny Archiologists Motto: ABD. Always Be Digging.

Apple snack! The gold chicken streaking back and forth is Gretchen. She’s the worst. Psychotic, obsessive, fast…all of the worst things. Notice how they don’t let her eat with them? It’s because she’s very annoying. (I say all of this in the same voice that I use to say nice things to the other chickens. I assume that means she thinks I like her. I don’t. I need your opinion! This is the beautiful #JapaneseMaple that is thriving by the garage. The question is should it remain a ground sweeping blob or do we limb it up so the trunk shows? She’s gonna blow! I’m now letting these onions grow just to see the flowers. I think I planted them last spring, they didn’t grow, then resprouted in the fall, and are now making flowers. Strange lifecycle.

The worst chicken has escaped and is running around in the garden. The second worst chicken, seen here, is plotting her escape but can’t fly over the fence from the ground and I moved the bench she usually uses as an assist. It has been non-stop pacing and assessing. She’s determined but I think I may have won this round.

So, this work plant has put out what I can only describe as a giant asparagus. (Also, it is pink and matches my shoes.) There are 10 of these plants and only one has an asparagus. It is about 4x the height of the plant. Fairly dramatic. Will update.
