Let me tell you the story of Rosie!
A few weeks ago my IG friend @chickendvm messaged me about a chicken at my local animal shelter featured on @adoptabirdnetwork. That’s really the end of the story. A chicken needed a home. Oh, and she happened to have the same name as my mother. Obviously, she was meant to be my chicken!
So, I had her picked up at the shelter and kept her in my pantry for a few days. Then she went to the vet and received a clean bill of health. Then she spent two weeks in isolation to make sure she was healthy. Next stop was a improvised pen near the main coop so the other girls could get used to her. She is now fully integrated into the flock and sleeping in the main coop.
Things I learned: She can fly. Rosie spent one night 12 feet up in a tree because I couldn’t catch her. She did come down in the morning.
She’s a bit of a bully. Current status is top hen. She doesn’t pick on the shy girls but she does not back down from a fight. Sorry Donna!

Fun story! We have lots of bats on our property. They live in the woods and in the garage vent. Normally we just see them fly out at night.
One morning I saw this bat chilling on a fountain in the front yard. He was very small, maybe the length of one finger. I thought maybe he just couldn’t find the garage vent before it got light.
A few hours later, after getting closer and closer, I noticed that he had a tick on his elbow! Case you see it? On the right side of the picture?
So, now I had to remove a tiny tick from a tiny bat. I recruited help, some extra long tweezers and we performed the tick removal!
At dusk he flew away and rejoined the group! I am convinced he landed low so I could find him and remove the tick. So smart!
